Realtors are a lot like doctors; most people only care to see them when they absolutely need them.

While that may be true, just like when seeing a doctor, when you find yourself in need of a Realtor, you definitely want to make sure that you’ve got the RIGHT Realtor on your side. The truth is, when it comes to buying and selling properties, all Realtors are bound by the same state laws and a given code of ethics. In that sense, the playing field is somewhat level regardless of who you ultimately choose as your Realtor.

The difference then, lies in the PRACTICE. How much experience does a given Realtor bring to the table? Do they outperform the industry or are they hovering around the industry average for number of annual transactions? What do past (and even present) clients have to say about their experience with a given Realtor?

Phone a Friend – Referrals

Referrals are the number one way that people find Realtors. Just like with a doctor, you want a Realtor you can trust that gives you a pleasant experience. If you know someone who has recently bought or sold a property, contact them to find out who they used and what their experience was. Find out if the buying/selling process was pleasant and if their Realtor was on top of their game, was readily available to answer questions and kept them informed through every step of the process.

Go With What You Know

Second only to referrals, most people find the perfect Realtor because they’ve used them in the past. If you had a pleasant buying or selling experience and the Realtor really worked hard for you, then why change a good thing? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Rave Reviews – Testimonials

Thanks to Google, it’s possible to leave a review on almost anything now days. Restaurants, car dealerships, daycare centers and yes, real estate offices. Regardless of how you find a particular Realtor, do some research to find out what other people have said about their experience with that particular Realtor. Referrals from trusted friends are priceless, but it’s also helpful to have feedback from other people whom you don’t know. Ask Questions – Industry Experience

Once you’ve narrowed your search, interview a perspective Realtor to get a feel for how effective they are in their field. Getting the clients into a home (or helping them sell it) is the end goal, but different Realtors have different plans of attack. Questions like “How many sales transactions do you handle per year? Do you take additional continuing education other than what the state requires? Do you have any designations?” are all great questions that will provide a glimpse into how seriously a Realtor takes his or her profession as well as how effective they are in helping clients find the right home.


In Real Estate, accreditation matters. Realtors that have a long list of certifications and designations after their name usually aren’t just tooting their own horn. Those accreditation require a great deal of hard work and an ongoing commitment to better business practices. The more designations a Realtor has (typically) illustrates their commitment to their profession and doing the absolute best job for their clients.
