Located on placid Lake Norman, the town of Cornelius has developed into an affluent lake community. Housing a population of 26,898 people, Cornelius is adorned with luxurious homes and emerald golf courses, including a championship course at The Peninsula Club designed by renowned golf-course architect, Rees Jones. The Peninsula is the premiere residential community in Cornelius; an exquisite destination for the avid boater, dedicated golfer, or luxury home-buyer. Surrounded by 10 pristine public parks, Cornelius is extremely family and pet friendly. The Town of Cornelius is Mecklenburg County’s second youngest town, founded in the year 1893 and incorporated in 1905. Historians can trace the town’s origin back to the rise of cotton weighing and railroad expansion. However, the most significant event in Cornelius’s growth was the damming of the Catawba River to create Lake norman. In the year 1963, Duke Power built the dam to provide the area with hydroelectric power as well as recreational opportunities. The formation of Lake Norman created approximately 70 miles of premium lakefront property and continues to be the prominent attraction of the area.
